and the US Catholic Church
During a private audience at the Vatican on October 8th, 2025, the Hope Border Institute and Bishop Mark J. Seitz presented Pope Leo XIV with messages from members of the immigrant community in the United States.

To the His Holiness Pope Leo XIV and to our sisters and brothers in the church in the United States:
We come to you in the midst of a heavy trial.
Escúchennos. [Listen to us.]
We are a voice woven from the prayers, hopes and tears of immigrant communities across the United States, from California to Texas, Iowa, North Carolina and beyond.
Many of us were forced to leave behind everything that was most precious – family, home, the communities that gave us a sense of belonging, and the land where our children played and learned.
Now, when deportations strike, the loss is repeated. Family bonds are broken, communities are scattered, and our children are stripped of safety, health and education.
We live in a state of constant anxiety, never knowing if tomorrow will bring separation. If the lives we worked so hard to build will be stripped from us. If we will be sent to countries where we were born but did not grow, to countries we fled and to countries we have never known.
Esta cultura del descarte nos mata. [This throwaway culture is killing us.]
When will anxiety stop being our way of life? When will we be able to live in peace?
Our faith pushes us to contribute – to our family, our community and to our world. We put food on people's tables, we build cities and roads, we care for the sick and elderly.
We carry pride in the work of our hands, in caring for our communities and this land we now inhabit, in our endurance through hardship and in our determination to keep going when everything seems lost.
We bring joy, color and life to our communities. We keep the sacred flame of faith burning.
Our resilience is our testimony. We know our dignity comes from God alone, and though others may deny it, it cannot be taken from us.
We have hope in our God, for he walks with us.
Porque Dios también huyó y buscó refugio. [Because God also fled and sought refuge.]
Holy Father, sisters and brothers in the church in the United States, we now ask you to walk with us, too.
Speak loudly with us to proclaim that we are children of God and not disposable. Walk with us and let us together build a society that embraces and celebrates everyone for who they are, where all can thrive. Together, let us be a church that refuses to abandon its people, one that walks in faith, justice and love.

Venimos ante ustedes en medio de una dura prueba.
Escúchennos.
Somos una voz que surge de las oraciones, esperanzas y lágrimas de las comunidades inmigrantes de todo Estados Unidos, desde California hasta Texas, Iowa, Carolina del Norte y más allá.
Muchos de nosotros nos vimos obligados a dejar atrás todo lo más preciado: la familia, el hogar, las comunidades que nos dieron un sentido de pertenencia y la tierra donde nuestros hijos jugaron y aprendieron.
Ahora, cuando las deportaciones golpean, la pérdida se repite. Los lazos familiares se rompen, las comunidades se dispersan y nuestros hijos se ven privados de seguridad, salud y educación.
Vivimos en un estado de ansiedad constante, sin saber si el mañana nos traerá separación. Si nos arrebatarán las vidas que tanto nos costó construir. Si nos enviarán a países donde nacimos pero no crecimos, a países de los que huimos y a países que nunca hemos conocido.
Esta cultura del descarte nos mata.
¿Cuándo dejará la ansiedad de ser nuestra forma de vida? ¿Cuándo podremos vivir en paz?
Nuestra fe nos impulsa a contribuir a nuestra familia, a nuestra comunidad y al mundo. Ponemos comida en la mesa, construimos ciudades y carreteras, cuidamos de los enfermos y ancianos.
Nos enorgullecemos del trabajo de nuestras manos, del cuidado de nuestras comunidades y de esta tierra que ahora habitamos, de nuestra resistencia ante las dificultades y de nuestra determinación de seguir adelante cuando todo parece perdido.
Llevamos alegría, color y vida a nuestras comunidades. Mantenemos viva la llama sagrada de la fe.
Nuestra resiliencia es nuestro testimonio. Sabemos que nuestra dignidad proviene solo de Dios, y aunque otros la nieguen, nadie nos la puede arrebatar.
Tenemos esperanza en nuestro Dios, porque él camina con nosotros.
Porque Dios también huyó y buscó refugio.
Santo Padre, hermanas y hermanos de la Iglesia en Estados Unidos, les pedimos que también caminen con nosotros.
Hablen con nosotros para proclamar que somos hijos de Dios y no desechables. Acompáñennos y construyamos juntos una sociedad que abrace y celebre a cada persona por quien es, donde todos puedan prosperar. Juntos, seamos una iglesia que se niega a abandonar a su gente, una que camina en la fe, la justicia y el amor.
Acompáñennos a construir un mundo que de verdad es para todas y todos.
